Verna Marie (White) Tischhauser, age 91, passed away peacefully June 22, 2020 at the Morris County Assisted Living. She was born May 16, 1929 at home east of White City, Kansas to Arthur and Angeline (Sloop) White.
Verna started school in a one room country grade school 4 miles east of White City. Most of her elementary school years were in that one room school. She did graduate from White City Rural High School.
Verna attended school at Bethany College at Lindsburg and at Emporia State Teachers College. She taught school at Highland Rural Grade School (a one room rural school) and later at Wilsey Elementary. She met the love of her life, Wilmer Tischhauser, while teaching at Wilsey. They were married in May of 1949 and had 66 happy years together until Wilmer preceded her in death in 2015
Verna enjoyed helping in her community and beyond, working in the Wilsey UMC as a Sunday School teacher and Board Member. She had the pleasure of serving as District Officer of the East Kansas United Methodist Women and President of the Emporia-Manhattan District of United Methodist Women. Locally she was a member of the Wilsey Rebekah Lodge and served as Morris Co 4-H home improvement leader for many years.
Wilmer & Verna purchased a motor home in 1978 and spent many years traveling from Florida to California and most of the western US. For 30 years, they spent their winters living in Westlaco, TX spending most of their winters making many new friends from all over the US and Canada. Summers were spent at their farm north of Wilsey opening up an on the farm antique store and also where they loved entertaining their many friends and family at the famous “Red Rooster” chicken house.
Verna will be missed by all her family and many friends, but everyone knows that Verna & Wilmer are back together as one of God’s great teams, forever.
Verna is survived by her two sons, Marvin (wife Marsha) and Mike (wife Bev), 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family will have a private cemetery service/celebration of life on July 11. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wilsey United Methodist Church in care of Sawyer Funeral Home, 137 N. Union Street, Council Grove, Kansas 66846.
