Obituary

Peggy Darlene (Horton) Colby, 89, passed away Friday, May 29 in St. Augustine, Florida where they were living.  Peggy was born September 29, 1930 in the Elm Creek Township, Morris County, Kansas. 

Peggy lived in Wilsey until she moved to Council Grove for her senior year in High School where she graduated in 1948.  It was at Council Grove High School where she met the love of her life, Gene Colby.  They were married in New London, CT, December 18, 1948 where Gene was stationed while serving in the Navy.

Peggy is survived by her husband of 71 years, Gene Colby, their daughters Lynda Whitlock and husband Stuart, St. Augustine, FL, and Diane Wolfe, Council Grove, KS.  They had four grandchildren Kevin Zimmerman; Darren Zimmerman and his fiancée Brianna; Angela and her husband Dave Hulays; Brian Whitlock and his wife Jennifer.  Five great grand-children, Owen and Max Hulays; Colby, Charlotte and Emma Whitlock.  She is also survived by her brother Guy Horton and his wife Donna, sister-in-law Bert Horton and many loved nieces and nephews and friends. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents Lue and Bonnie Horton, brothers, Leo, Dean, Don, Leland Horton and sister, Wilma Bennett. 

Peggy loved being a stay-at-home wife and mother. She helped out at Colby’s Café, the restaurant they first owned when they moved back to Council Grove in 1956 then helped out at Colby’s Toggery whenever she could. Peggy was an active member at the First Congregational Church and was well known for her ability to cut and perm hair for all of her friends and family.  They enjoyed living at the Council Grove Lake for many years in the 70’s and 80’s, boating and entertaining their friends.  In the 1990’s they moved to the warmer climate of Texas.  Peggy enjoyed living on the golf course and learning to play golf.  She loved her friends and enjoyed socializing with them.  She was an avid bridge player and participated in many activities in the golf club community where they resided.  Peggy loved life, enjoyed people and made friends easily.
