Alberta Mae Horton, 89, of Council Grove, Kansas passed away at Morris County Hospital January 23, 2021.
Alberta or “Bert” as she preferred to be known was born September 14, 1931 at her parents’, Paul T. Johnson and Lois Johnson (Hylton), farm located between Dunlap and Council Grove. “Bert” graduated from Council Grove High School in 1949.
On September 23, 1949, she was united in marriage to Donald Ross Horton. “Bert” and Don had four children; Cheryl, Renita, Roxanne, and Bradley.
“Bert” loved cooking and baking for her family and others. She had a passion for sewing and made most of her children’s clothes. After her children were grown, she continued sewing, mending and alterations for others.
Downtown Council Grove has known “Bert” for many years. She was an employee of Colby’s Toggery until Peg and Gene Colby retired and sold the business. After, she worked for her son, Brad, at Bosch Furniture and Carpet until its closing. She was a member of the Congregational Church.
“Bert” and Don loved to travel. They made many trips with friends and family. They were able to travel to 49 states. They were also regular attendees at reunions of Don’s Navy buddies. One memorable trip was a 60th reunion of D-Day which they took with daughter Cheryl and her husband Mike, along with other veterans and their families.
Everyone who knew “Bert” developed a love and respect for her warm, caring personality.
She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl (Mike) Connell and Roxanne (Ron) Wooden, daughter-in-law Gail Horton, her longtime friend and companion, Gordon King, fourteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by her sister, Norma Jean Worley, and numerous nieces and nephews.
“Bert” was preceded in death by her parents, husband Don, daughter Renita Rothe`, son Bradley Horton, grandson Kenley Horton and brother Sonny Johnson.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00, Saturday, January 30th, at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made and sent to First Congregational Church UCC, PO Box 257, Council Grove, KS 66846.
