Michael (Mikey) Steven Luce, 68, of Council Grove, Kansas passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2024, after a short battle with cancer. He was able to pass at home with the loving care from Hand in Hand Hospice.
Mike was born on July 14th, 1955, in Pontiac, Michigan. His parents, Richard and Shirley Luce moved to Marion, Indiana where Mike and his older brother, Rick grew up. After graduating from Marion High School, Mike received his Speech Pathology Master’s degree from Indiana University in 1978. Mike and Ann were married on July 15, 1978, and moved to Council Grove where Mike worked for FHSEC as a Speech Therapist. He worked for 44 years, in USD 417, USD 251 and USD 253 districts. He retired in 2018.
Mike had many interests including: Boy Scout Leader, Big Brother, hot-air ballooning, sailing, traveling, camping, coaching sports, being a part of The Sunndogs band, and working in theatre, beginning in high school.
Mike and Ann enjoyed volunteering for activities including Voices of the Wind People Pageant, Symphony in the Flint Hills; Flint Hills Rebuilders, Wahshunga Days, Child Health Care, Child Assault Prevention and Angel Tree Project at Christmas. He and Ann, along with a group of others, started the After Prom Party which he and Ann continued to organize and run for 21 years.
He had several passions: the best one was spending most summers in Indiana and Boothbay Harbor, Maine, with Ann. Others were working at White Memorial Camp, Council Grove Life Center, and working the clock and books for many of the sporting activities at Council Grove High School.
Mike was well known throughout the school districts he worked in. He will be remembered by many students for his yearly readings of humorous Christmas stories. It was his wish that this tradition be continued for the students and his books will be donated to help make that wish come true. Mike was involved for many years at The Congregational Church, even filling in when the minister was gone and with upkeep of the building and grounds. All this being said, Mike could always be counted on to help where there was a need.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, father-in-law Ralph Angstmann, and several close family members and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife Ann; mother-in law Joyce Angstmann; brother Rick Luce & wife Sally Corey; Aunt Valerie Burke; nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews; a bonus daughter; brothers-in-law: Ralph & Mary Lou Angstmann and Kevin & Suzi Angstmann; and a host of friends.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 1-3, Sunday, June 2, 2024, at Community Christian Church, with memorial services starting at 3:00.
Ann has requested that people dress casually for the service and that, if you choose, wear a fun necktie, of which he was known for. There will be a select few of his ties available to borrow at the service.
