Charles Evan Miller

Charles Evan Miller, 73, of Dwight, Kansas, passed away March 22, 2023 at Morris County Hospital.

He was born December 27, 1949, the son of Lowell Lee and Elaine Louise (Lindgren) Miller. He was a Dwight Rural High School graduate, where he was a member of the Dwight Rockets team that won Class BB Basketball State Championships for 1965-66 and 1966-67. He was a Kansas State University graduate, with a B.S. in Animal Science.

Charles married Diane Weir on June 14, 1969.  Together they raised their two children Lanny and Dustin.

Charles, along with his parents and brother Darrell, owned and operated Miller Dairy.  Miller Dairy was later incorporated to the Miller Brother Farms, Inc. for a heifer replacement program and growing crops.

He was a member of Dwight United Methodist Church, serving as a Church Trustee; served on the Rural Water District #1 for 21 years; Dwight Sunflowers Project Leader and the Dairy Superintendent for Morris County Fair; Morris County Extension Council member; Post Commander for the American Legion Post #289; and a member of the Masons. Charles also served in the Kansas National Guard from 1970-1976.

Charles loved the outdoors and became a life-long farmer.    Spring was his favorite time of the year.  Working the ground and planting held the promise of new things to come!  The world seemed like a better place after Charles had a conversation with farmer neighbors that he met on the country road.

Charles enjoyed following and watching his kids and grandkids in sports and other activities.  He was an avid K-State sports fan.  Charles enjoyed playing slots at casinos that usually ended by donating money to the casino.  Family was important with holidays, visits, fishing, and family trips.  His sons remember playing ball after milking, working on many old car problems that he always seemed to have the answer for and sharing knowledge of life.  Charles’s infectious laugh followed the sharing of the motto, “You can’t hoot with the owls at night and expect to soar with the eagles the next day.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, nephew Pat Weir, and brother-in-law Bob Winter.

Charles is survived by his wife Diane; children: Richard Lanny Miller and wife Shelly, of Bucyrus, KS and Dustin Charles Miller and wife Amy, of Canton, OH; grandchildren: Evan, Payton, Kyle, and Katelynn; siblings: Joyce Winter, Karen Bauman (Galen), and Darrell Miller (Mina); brother-in-law Daryl Weir (Joyce); sister-in-law Denise Franck (Jim); and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Sunday, March 26 from 3-5, at Sawyer Funeral Home. Memorial service will be held at 10:30, on Monday, March 27, at Dwight United Methodist Church, with a graveside service following at Dwight Cemetery.
