Barbara Nielsen

Barbara Ann Nielsen, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and cherished longtime resident of Dunlap, Kansas, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2026 at the age of 92.

Born on January 9, 1934, in Larned, Kansas, Barbara was the beloved daughter of Milferd and Helen Dunham. She grew up with a gentle grace and a strong spirit, attending Highland Park High School in Topeka, Kansas, where she graduated with the Class of 1952.

Following high school, Barbara began working at Hallmark Cards, dedicating a decade of service to the company. It was during this chapter of her life that she met the love of her life, Ray Nielsen. The two were united in marriage on August 28, 1965, beginning a beautiful partnership built on mutual devotion and shared values. Shortly thereafter, Barbara and Ray made their home in Dunlap, Kansas, where she would remain a cornerstone of her community and neighborhood for decades.

On March 6, 1968, Barbara and Ray welcomed their pride and joy, their son Mike. Barbara was an extraordinary mother whose life centered around caring for her family. Her quiet strength, unwavering kindness, and gentle presence provided a steady foundation for all who knew her. She was also an active and faithful member of the Dunlap Methodist Church until it’s closing and then with First Congregational Church in Council Grove, Kansas.

Barbara found joy in the simple, beautiful pleasures of life. She had a tender affection for hummingbirds and could often be found watching them flit about her garden. She was an avid sports enthusiast who cheered passionately for Kansas Jayhawks basketball and Kansas City Chiefs football. In quieter afternoons, she enjoyed watching her favorite game shows and soap operas. Barbara was a wonderful cook whose kitchen was always warm and welcoming, especially during the holidays, which she treasured spending surrounded by family.

Her thoughtful nature was unmatched: Barbara possessed an innate ability to remember every birthday, anniversary, and milestone. Family and friends could always look forward to opening their mailboxes to find a greeting card penned in her characteristically beautiful, elegant handwriting—a lasting testament to how deeply she held everyone in her heart. Above all titles, she was a proud and loving grandmother, taking immense joy in every moment spent with her three grandchildren.

Barbara is survived by her loving son, Mike Nielsen, and his family; her three adored grandchildren, Stephanie, Sierra and Maraya; her siblings, Robert Dunham, Kay Higgs, and Darrel Dunham; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ray Nielsen, and her parents, Milferd and Helen Dunham.

A Celebration of Barbara’s life will be held on Friday, October 31, 2026 @ 10:00am, at Sawyer Funeral Home, Council Grove, KS. Burial will follow at Americus Cemetery.
